Message from the President – October 2023

President’s Letter for October 2023

Winding down 2023

We just passed the technically accurate first day of fall. A lot of the discussion now is centered around spraying trees to get them ready for winter quarters, buying new lighting for the tropicals,
and setting up tables to hold them (wherever your spouse will agree). We still have some time
according to the forecasts, but it is clear that time is running out for this season.  I need to do a little work clearing out the window wells where many of my semi-hardy trees reside for the winter. Those work great for me as I can water my trees weekly from the comfort of the basement. The window wells get cold, but not freezing. The hardy trees need to wait for a while until the garden stops producing vegetables and is ready to take the hardy trees. Other people are preparing spots in garages, or sheds, or getting ready to erect hoop houses to protect their precious trees.

Even as we all individually prepare to settle in for the winter, the club as a whole still has some
activities planned.

October PSBS General Membership Meeting
Larry Magee is planning a presentation about pines for the October meeting. I for one have
never had many pines and I am hoping to learn some tricks to enhance their development. Plan
to join us at the College of DuPage for that presentation on Wednesday, October 3rd at 7:00 PM.

Membership Recruitment Event in Naperville
We just received word that Naperville approved our application for a “Free Speech” event in
downtown Naperville on Sunday, October 22nd, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. We will be in a
pavilion along the Riverwalk and plan to display a few trees and work on a few others.
Naperville offers the space for free to organizations and we hope to take advantage and attract
some viewers and potential members. We may offer a demonstration at some point during the
day.

Weather will not be an issue due to the pavilion, but we hope for a nice crisp fall day with lots of
people walking along the Riverwalk. More details are to come.

I will hope to see all of you on Wednesday, the 3rd , and on Sunday, the 22nd!
