President’s Message December 2022

Board Changes

We have made some changes to the Board of Directors in the past month.  Dani Fogarty has agreed to take over the vacant position of Publicity Director.  The Board voted him into that position during the October Board Meeting.  Dani has a film and video editing background and is a motion graphics animator.  I admit I am not sure what that means, but I can summarize it by saying that he knows his way around the computer and social media better than the rest of us.  He is working to activate and enhance the PSBS Instagram account and posting to the Facebook page, as others continue to do.  Welcome, Dani!

Also, Jennifer Price has resigned as our Programs Director, planning the programs for the General Membership meetings.  Jennifer has an incredibly challenging schedule as a bonsai artist, involving regular travel out of the area, both in the U.S. and internationally.  Fortunately, before leaving the Board, Jennifer has scheduled us with interesting and informative programs for the first several months of the new year.

Larry Magee, one of our At-Large Directors, has been busily working with Jennifer most of the year on programming and has agreed to take over the Programs Director position, which the Board will make official at its next meeting in January.

Thank you, Jennifer, for your vision and fascinating programs during 2022.  And welcome, Larry, for your hard work in making these programs a reality in 2022 and beyond.

We also have two open spots for At-Large Board Members in 2023.  The By-Laws allow up to three At-Large Board Members, and Steve Fluett is the only At-Large Board Member.  If anyone else in the Society would be interested in joining the Board of Directors, contact me at PSBSPresident@gmail.com or any other Board member, or attend any of the Board meetings, which are always open to all PSBS members.  Our next Board meeting will be held on January 10, 2023, at 7:00 PM via Zoom to plan our events scheduled for February.  As the time draws nearer, it will be announced via email.

As always, there is no Board of Directors meeting in December, and we do not have a General Membership meeting or Bonsai Hai newsletter in January.

Our First 2023 Project

As announced last month, periodically, we place an order for PSBS polo shirts, hoodies, and caps, embroidered with the PSBS logo and name.  Jason Davids agreed to coordinate this project and will hand out order forms at the Christmas Party on December 7 at 7:00 PM at the College of DuPage, so bring your checkbook.  Polos and hoodies will be available in green and blue.  The shirts and hoodies can be personalized for an additional charge of $5.00.  We hope to be able to distribute the new items at the February General Membership meeting, and we can all wear nice new shirts or hoodies to the Silhouette Show on February 18, 2023, at Cantigny!  (I am wearing my hoodie.  It will be cold!)  More info to come via email.

Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry Christmas!!

We hope to see all your smiling faces at the Christmas Party in our usual room at COD on December 7, 2022, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  There will be door prizes and the annual tradition of a White Elephant exchange involving bonsai-related items.  Wrap up something you no longer need and go home with something new and (hopefully) useful.  Bring a treat to share.  Most important will be the opportunity to sit and enjoy the holiday season with your bonsai friends, reminisce about Bonsai Trees Past, and look forward to Bonsai Trees Future.

And always . . .

Let us know if you have ideas for presentations you would like to see discussed in 2023.  It is your club, and we want to know what information you need and can use.  We have already heard a suggestion to include a presentation on air layering, which was added to the May schedule.  If you have any other topic you want to be addressed, either as a Bonsai 101 or as the evening’s main event, please email me at PSBSPresident@gmail.com, and we will try to include it in our 2023 programming.
