Remembering Tony

Anthony “Tony” W. Welninski, age 77, at rest on July 13, 2021. Tony was a police officer with the Chicago Police Dept. for 42 years. Beloved husband of Phyllis (nee Fetro) for 57 years. Loving father of Kristine Torres, Scott (Christine) Welninski and Danata (Richard) Kubitz. Cherished grandfather of Justin “J-cat”. Dear brother of Walter (Dolores) Welninski and Patricia (Don) Spencer. Fond uncle cousin and friend to many.

Tony was also a fixture in the bonsai community. He was active in both the Prairie State Bonsai Society and the Midwest Bonsai Society. He started his addiction over 50 years ago. He was trained in the Japanese style and developed many prized trees for his collection. (No matter how many trees he had there were only 48 trees he would tell his wife)

At any bonsai event he would volunteer to help. He would work at both the Prairie State and the Midwest shows greeting visitors, teaching the kid’s workshop (he enjoyed teaching the kids about Bonsai), answering the questions of the visitors. and doing demo’s. He volunteered at the CBG and helped with their Bonsai collection.
Every year he and Victor would go to Rendezvous and he would take lessons from some of the top professionals. He was always improving his skills.

What will be missed the most is his smile, his kindness and friendly nature, and his optimistic approach to life.
